What a Canada GST/HST invoice must show

  • Your business or trading name, and the invoice date.
  • The total amount paid or payable.
  • For sales of $30 or more: your GST/HST registration number, and the GST/HST charged (or a note that the total includes it, with the rate).
  • For sales of $100 or more, also: the customer's name, the payment terms, and a description of each item.
  • A unique invoice number (not a legal rule, but needed for your records and your client's).

GST/HST rates in Canada

5%GST: Alberta, BC, Manitoba, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the territories (plus PST/QST where it applies)
13%HST: Ontario
14%HST: Nova Scotia (from 1 April 2025)
15%HST: New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island

When you must register

You must register for GST/HST once your taxable sales pass $30,000 in a single calendar quarter or over four consecutive quarters (the "small supplier" limit). Below that, registration is optional.

Good to know

  • Your GST/HST number is your 9-digit business number followed by RT0001 (e.g. 123456789 RT0001).
  • Provinces with PST (BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba) or QST (Quebec) need that tax too; add it as its own rate or line.
  • Keep records for 6 years from the end of the tax year.

  4. Download or send. Get the PDF, or create a free account to email it, track payment and send reminders.

Questions about invoicing in Canada

Which rate do I charge a customer in another province?

GST/HST generally follows the place of supply, which is usually where the customer is. A business in Alberta selling to a customer in Ontario usually charges 13% HST.

Checked November 2026. This is general information, not tax advice; rules and thresholds change, so check with your accountant or the tax authority.
