HSN and SAC codes: what they are and how many digits you need
HSN classifies goods and SAC classifies services. Your turnover decides how many digits to print.
What they are
HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) codes classify goods, for example 8504 for chargers and power supplies. SAC (Services Accounting Code) codes classify services and start with 99, for example 998314 for software development.
How many digits
- Turnover up to ₹5 crore: 4-digit HSN is required on B2B invoices, optional on B2C invoices.
- Turnover above ₹5 crore: 6-digit HSN on all invoices.
- Services use 6-digit SAC codes.
Finding your code
Search the GST rate finder on the CBIC website or the HSN search on the GST portal. Your accountant's past filings usually show the codes you already use.
How Fliss Invoice helps
Save each item once with its HSN or SAC, unit, rate and GST slab. It fills in every time, and invoices print an HSN-wise tax summary in the Tally format.
This guide is general information to help you get started. It is not tax or legal advice; rules and rates change, so confirm details with your accountant or the official GST notifications.
